چکیده

Models that characterize the displacement instability of the thermally grown oxide (TGO) found in some thermal barrier systems are reviewed, consolidated and extended. It is demonstrated that the simulations are only consistent with the observations whenever the bond coat and TGO both undergo plastic deformation. The TGO yields at the peak temperature, during growth, while the bond coat yields on thermal cycling. The trends oppose. Namely, the TGO displacement is diminished by increasing the high temperature strength of the bond coat, but is increased upon increasing the TGO strength. The model rationalizes certain experimental trends, particularly the decrease in durability as the hot time per cycle decreases. Interactions between the instability and cracks in the thermal barrier layer are discussed. # 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Simulation of stresses and delamination in a plasma-sprayed thermal barrier system upon thermal cycling

A thermal barrier system with plasma-sprayed thermal barrier coating (TBC) has been analyzed subject to thermal cycling. The thermally grown oxide (TGO) is allowed to grow at the peak temperature in the cycle, with both thickening and lateral components of the growth strain. The stresses in the TGO are also allowed to relax at high temperature when they attain a critical level. The bond coat is...

Influence of Cyclic Thermal Loading on Fatigue Behavior of Thermal Barrier Coatings

Thermally insulating ceramic coatings also known as thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) have been essential technologies to improve the performance and efficiency of advanced gas turbines in service at extremely high temperatures. Mathematical Analysis of Microstructural Characterizations for Thermally Grown Oxide Layers in Thermal Barrier Coatings

The thermomechanical properties of thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) such as elastic modulus, thermal conductivity, and coefficient of thermal expansions are determined by pores, cracks, and splat boundaries, which affect the thermoelastic properties of thermally grown oxide (TGO) layer and the fracture behavior in TBCs. The thermoelastic characteristics thus have been investigated through mathem...

Cyclic oxidation-induced cracking of platinum-modified nickel-aluminide coatings

Short cracks, extending to the interdiffusion zone, have been observed in platinum-modified nickel-aluminide diffusion coatings on single-crystal CMSX-4 superalloys after these have been subject to short (10 min) rapid thermal cycles. The cracks were revealed after removing the thermally grown oxide formed during cycling on the coating surfaces. Cracking was observed for coatings subject to the...
